ART IN THE GARDEN, The Highland Manor, Doors Open, Owen Sound, June 2009

The Third Annual Art in the Garden Show during Doors Open, Owen Sound at the Highland Manor Bed and Breakfast was another great success. Although the weather did not cooperate the second day, everyone had a marvellous time. It is always fun to get together with a group of artists.

"Sanctuary" by Carol-Ann Barrett

The Chantry Island Light Station, located at Southampton on the Bruce Peninsula, was constructed in 1855. Robert Mills was appointed temporary keeper on Chantry Island 1855-1857 and Duncan McGregor Lambert became the first permanent Lightkeeper on Chantry Island 1858-1880. Today, it is managed by The Marine Heritage Society under agreements and restrictions from the Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian Wildlife Service. The Light Station is part of the national bird sanctuary that extends 180 meters out into the water. The sanctuary is one of the most important migratory bird nesting places south of James Bay.

Born in Owen Sound, Carol-Ann realized from an early age, she had a flair for art. Although her professional career took her elsewhere, both in Canada and England, her love of creating works of art stayed with her throughout. Pursuing the need to create, she has dabbled in many media and is mostly self-taught. In addition to her beautifully romantic and finely detailed oil and acrylic paintings, Carol-Ann also produces some very impressive crafts such as painted birdhouses, flower pots, painted tins and much more. Retirement has brought her back to her roots where she and her artist husband, Noel Martin, have hopes of eventually establishing their own gallery. These days Carol-Ann's paintings can be viewed at Bridges Art Gallery in Owen Sound (http://www.bridgesartowensound.blogspot.com/) and from time-to-time various other exhibitions in the Grey Bruce area including the Meaford Hall Galleries (http://www.meafordhall.ca/). She is an Executive Member of the Meaford Creative Arts Association (http://www.meafordcreativearts.blogspot.com/), the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts, Art Town Owen Sound and the Tom Thompson Gallery, Owen Sound.

ALICE FROM DALLAS

In Texas we met Alice from Dallas,

Her heart filled with love and no malice,

From her income as a guide,

Including tips on the side,

She had hopes of buying a palace.

Alice kibitzed with Mike to begin,

Then took over the reins from our Jen,

She was dressed up to the nines,

And her unrehearsed lines,

Made us chuckle again and again.

She toured us around Dallas the pretty,

Her comments insightful and witty,

All along rich Turtle Creek,

Where the huge mansions bespeak,

Of affluence in this Texas City.

The Lady showed us a whole awful lot,

Including where Kennedy was shot,

Together walking the Knoll,

She the sad story retold,

And her theory on "who dun it" we got.

A guide with great charismatic powers,

We knew her not more than two hours,

When too soon she had to leave,

Well this may be hard to believe,

But already we felt she was ours!

ARTFEST…on the bay 2009

MEAFORD HARBOUR
JULY 4 AND 5, 2009

The Meaford Creative Arts Association presents ARTFEST…on the bay, Saturday, July 4, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 5, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. adjacent to the Meaford Harbour Pavilion. Approximately 70 artists and artisans will be showing and selling their original works of art. This annual event showcases high quality work including paintings in water colours, acrylics, oil and pastels as well as photography, jewellery, pottery, fabric art, wood working, iron work, stained glass and much more.

The Meaford Hospital Auxiliary will again be displaying ceiling tiles painted by members of the Meaford Creative Arts Association. The purpose for these tiles is to both raise money for the Auxiliary while at the same time beautifying various areas of the Hospital. In addition to the broad assemblage of visual art, you will be able to enjoy music by the Regal Jazz Band on Saturday between 1 and 4:00, a silent auction, a beer and wine garden, children's face painting, Windsong Carriage Rides on Sunday, a variety show on Sunday featuring Keray Wonch, harmonicist Bob Gunns and and a few more surprises. A great weekend to bring the family to the Harbour to participate in the festivities and perhaps discover something you have been searching for…that truly special piece of art!
