THE SOFTEST THINGS

by Noel Martin
May 3, 1989

Snowflakes and cobwebs and fluffy white kittens,

The wool from a sheep that is made into mittens,

Fine feather for down, a moth’s furry wings,

These are a few of the softest of things.

Rose petals, cottontails, a breeze on the beach,

Flannelette and marshmallows, the fuzz on a peach,

Tender young lips that reach up to kiss you,

Teddy bear hugs, Royale Bathroom Tissue.

GENEROUS THOUGHTS

by Noel Martin, 2005

I think I shall buy you some flowers, I may
Even buy roses, I really can’t say,
Whichever I choose, I shall buy you a bunch,
I think I shall buy them right after lunch.

Last week’s perfume I almost bought you was nice,
Subtle combination, lilacs and spice,
When I’m back there again, I’ll buy for sure,
I think I shall get you an ounce or more.

I’m thinking I will take you out for a ride,
Rent a limousine, with you by my side,
I know something like that would truly be great,
Maybe next Friday, I mean it, just wait.

I contemplate buying you bushels of stuff,
Yet thinking about it is just not enough,
It is the thought that counts, is what they all say,
But I give you something concrete today.

And given to you freely, right from my heart,
Something that permits me make a fresh start,
Since my wallet is still infested with moths,
From me, with regards, these generous thoughts.

LEARNING TO SAIL ON A REALLY WINDY DAY

by Noel Martin, 2007

See how they sway,
Tossing, frothing with spray,
Exhorting their fellows,
"Get out of the way!"

Up picks the wind,
One small sailboat upends,
Splashing into the waves,
Two sailors it sends.

Teetering mast,
A gust worse than the last,
Threatening novices,
The seconds fly past.

Quick as a wink,
There's two more in the drink,
What squeals of delight,
It's good they can't sink.

FRONT COVER OF THE SEPTEMBER 2008 ISSUE OF CURIOUS - THE TOURIST GUIDE

Front cover of the September 2008 Issue of Curious the Tourist Guide
"Split Rail" by Noel Edward Martin

Noel came screaming into the world on a cold January morning in the little town of Lewisporte, Newfound-land. Creative from as far back as he can recall, amongst his earliest memories are those of drawing cartoon characters from comic books even before he began attending school. Today he credits his drawing and painting skills to natural talent which has been enhanced by constant practice and doodling which he always indulges in whenever there is a pen and paper near. While spending almost his entire adult life in Ontario, Noel's working career, however, was not in the field of art. Although enjoying it as a hobby, it was not until after retirement that he would turn to oil painting with such passion. He has often been described as a narrative painter and his beautiful paintings reflect his life experiences in a wide variety of subject matter. He also enjoys writing poetry and has had some of his work published.

These days Noel's paintings can be viewed at Bridges Art Gallery in Owen Sound (http://www.bridgesartowensound.blogspot.com/) and from time-to-time various other exhibitions in the Grey/Bruce area including the Meaford Hall Galleries. He is a member of the Meaford Creative Arts Association (http://www.meafordcreativearts.blogspot.com/), the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts and Art Town, Owen Sound. Incidentally, the "artinmartin" is derived from his unique signature Noel Martin.
